United Way of Southeast Louisiana

Live United

Mother's Day is supposed to be a time of celebration.

Instead, many people were left injured - two of them children - because shots rang out at a traditional second line in the Seventh Ward where hundreds had gathered.

The violence is senseless. Our heart goes out to all who were harmed.

The Tipitina's Foundation, Gambit's Foundation for Entertainment Development and Education, Silence is Violence and United Way of Southeast Louisiana are working together to give people a way to help victims of violent crime.

The organizations have established The 19 Fund, a special fund-raising effort to aid the victims of the May 12 shooting — and future victims of violence in greater New Orleans. The 19 Fund was the brainchild of representatives of the four nonprofits as well as several concerned citizens who volunteered to help victims of the shooting. The 19 Fund is aimed at helping victims who may need money, services or support. United Way will serve as the fiscal sponsor and Silence Is Violence will serve as the fund administrator.

Our area ranks among the highest in violent crime.  Worse yet, 1 in 5 offenses are committed by minors.

It's time to start fixing the problem. United Way of Southeast Louisiana is investing in youth and families so that hope may overrule hate.

When you invest in United Way, you help fund one of the largest crime prevention systems in the region. United Way prepares children to be successful in school through early childhood development programs. Mentoring and character building programs keep kids in class and off the streets, after-school programs provide youth development and the tools necessary for kids to graduate, to get and keep jobs, and have future careers.

United Way works to build a better New Orleans and make this a safer place to live, work and raise our children.
