“CHEERS FOR VOLUNTEERS”
with the New Orleans Zephyrs

Rebirth Brass Band performs the National Anthem.
On Wednesday, July 27, United Way hosted its annual “Cheers for Volunteers” event at Zephyr Field. Despite a slightly soggy start and a 1-hour rain delay, United Way and Zephyrs supporters filled the stands and cheered as the Zs solidly beat the Iowa Cubs.

The first 500 fans enjoyed free second-line handkerchiefs featuring artwork from Basin Street Recording Artists Rebirth Brass Band, who performed the National Anthem. Hot dogs were only $1 all night long, and United Way’s 2011-12 Campaign Chair John Hollowell, EVP Deep Water, Shell Energy Resources Company, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Ron Maestri, Ron Swoboda and Mike Schline of the New Orleans Zephyrs presented Hollowell, along with United Way Executive Vice President and COO Michael Williamson, with a check for over $5,600 from the Zephyr’s 2011 BaseBOWL tournament and proceeds from the night’s game.

Adding to the night’s fun, ten United Way contributors, each 1% givers, had the chance to win a brand new Honda FIT from Royal Honda.  The lucky drawing winner was Fred Morgan of Crescent Bank and Trust.
With the community’s support, the United Way team hits it out of the park for the Greater New Orleans Area.

John Hollowell threw out the first pitch of the night.
Fans posed with Boudreaux and Clotile, the Zs mascots.
