Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action

Friends and family gathered together enjoying turkey, oyster dressing and pumpkin bread pudding. It’s Thanksgiving and time for recollection.

It's time to remain united as we respect the right to differ.

It's time to recall the ideals of our Constitution that all are created equal with certain unalienable rights - life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It's time to reflect on your good fortunes and remember those who are stuggling.

Children and families across southeast Louisiana have no permanent shelter and go to bed hungry.

Thousands are trying to recover and rebuild from the historic flooding this year.

Thousands more – 42% of our Southeast Louisiana population—struggle every day just to meet basic needs. 19% live in poverty. 23% are ‘ALICE’— an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, employed. They are hard-working, tax-paying people living paycheck to paycheck who are just one harsh storm, one medical emergency or one car repair away from falling into poverty.

That’s why United Way of Southeast Louisiana thanks you for your gift.

United Way of Southeast Louisiana has a Blueprint for Prosperity to eradicate poverty in our region.  We are strategically investing in programs, initiatives, collaborations and advocacy efforts to meet our community’s greatest needs. We have a bold vision of equitable communities where all individuals are healthy, educated, and economically stable. Because you invest in United Way, you support programs for your children to your grandparents, that  can help make Southeast Louisiana a safer, better place to live, work and raise our families.

No matter where you live in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa or Washington parishes, your gift to United Way can affect someone next door, down the bayou or across the lake.

United Way is grateful for the lives you’re helping us change.  You believe in a community helping its own--that is why we exist, that is what we are committed to.

Happy Thanksgiving.
