United Way Honors J. Wayne Leonard

United Way of Southeast Louisiana's highest individual honor is its Alexis de Tocqueville Award. The Tocqueville Award is given in recognition of exemplary philanthropic leadership to an individual who leads by example to create a better community for all.

This rare and prestigious honor will be bestowed on former Entergy Corporation Chairman and CEO J. Wayne Leonard during a special dinner and reception starting at 6 p.m. on October 12, at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans.

I hope you'll join us at this event to show your support for United Way's commitment to doing whatever it can to eradicate poverty in our region and also to celebrate with Wayne as he accepts this honor.

Upon hearing that he would be the recipient of this recognition, Wayne said, "There comes a time in your life when you reflect on what's really important, on the legacy you want to leave. This has been especially true for me in recent years as I have battled non-curable cancer and its related health issues. As I continue this fight, I draw strength from my family and friends. I'm fortunate to have so many people that I can count on. During my own treatments, I have observed first-hand the severe difficulties our low income residents endure as they go it alone with their health and financial challenges. By working together with United Way, we can do something to positively impact their lives."
