Williamson’s Note: Reflecting on Recovery and Renewal Marking Hurricane Ida’s Second Anniversary

8.29.2023

As we mark the second anniversary of Hurricane Ida, the memories of its impact remain vivid as disasters continue to strike all around.

The winds and sand and mud – it was a moment that reshaped many Southeast Louisiana communities. For our neighbors who lived through it, the challenges that followed were undeniable, from shattered homes to disrupted lives. United Way of Southeast Louisiana stood by our communities during those difficult days and weeks, and our commitment to aiding recovery never faltered.

Stories of Resilience: From Surviving to Thriving
Among the damage, stories of resilience emerged – stories of neighbors helping neighbors, of a community united in the face of adversity. One such story is that of Ms. Spain*. The storm left her roof in danger of a total collapse, and she faced uncertainty, worried about her health and safety and the possibility of losing her home to the “never-ending” leaks. United Way’s commitment to long-term recovery ensured Ms. Spain received a new roof and a renewed sense of comfort.

“It is because of the contributions from your organization that I was able to receive a new roof for my home. Because of you, I can now enjoy the comfort of my home without having to worry about the damage getting progressively worse. I cannot thank you enough for the role that you played in making this repair happen. Again, thank you so much.”

Stories of resilience like Ms. Spain’s are thanks to United Way’s network of partners and generous donors, who gave with their hearts to mobilize our response.

We can never thank you enough.

Long-Term Recovery Results: Making a Difference
Our commitment to long-term recovery is grounded in actions that speak louder than words. In the wake of Hurricane Ida, United Way of Southeast Louisiana:

  • Devoted over $1 million in long-term rebuilding efforts, ensuring families had safe, livable homes;
  • Provided critical rebuilding support to 149 households – including the total repair of 30 homes – allowing them to recover and thrive; and
  • Directed advocacy efforts toward improving infrastructure and housing, addressing education needs, and supporting initiatives fostering resilience.

In total, your United Way invested more than $5 million in the families, partners, and communities affected by Ida.

Our century-old legacy of standing with Southeast Louisiana during times of crisis is a testament to the power of collaboration. As we reflect on the second anniversary of Hurricane Ida, we honor the resilience of our community and reiterate our pledge to continue creating lasting change, rebuilding lives, and ensuring a brighter future for all.

Always There for You: Our Pledge After Disaster Strikes
At United Way, we understand that recovery is a journey that extends far beyond the immediate aftermath. It’s called long-term recovery because it’s just that – long. Our commitment to our community doesn’t end when the storm passes. It’s just the beginning. When disaster strikes, we’re not just responders. We’re partners in the long-term recovery process. We stand by families and communities as they rebuild their lives and homes and renew their dreams.

Where There’s a Need, There’s a United Way
The phrase “Where there’s a need, there’s a United Way” captures our enduring commitment to being a leader in times of crisis – no matter what. It signifies our role as a reliable partner who works tirelessly to ensure that no one faces the challenges of recovery alone. As we reflect on the anniversary of Hurricane Ida, we reaffirm our promise to stand united with our community, offering immediate relief and the sustained support needed to heal, rebuild, and thrive so we can all rise together.

United in the face of any challenge,
