As we celebrate America’s birthday, we should all strive to do more than mark another year in our nation’s history. We celebrate an idea. An enduring belief that every person deserves the opportunity to pursue a better life, provide for their family, contribute to their community, and realize their dreams.
Nearly 250 years ago, our nation’s founders articulated a bold vision centered on liberty, opportunity, and the pursuit of happiness. While America’s journey has never been perfect, the promise of the American Dream continues to inspire generations to work, serve, innovate, and build a brighter future.
For more than 100 years, United Way has been privileged to play a role in helping make that promise more attainable for millions of Americans. Through economic mobility initiatives, educational opportunities, financial stability programs, disaster response efforts, and community partnerships, we have worked alongside neighbors, businesses, faith communities, volunteers, and donors to strengthen the foundations upon which opportunity is built.
At its heart, the American Dream is about more than financial success. I believe it is about dignity. About having the chance to thrive. About ensuring that every child can dream boldly, every family can weather life’s challenges, and every individual can find pathways to meaningful work, stable housing, financial security, and a hopeful future.
Today, our nation faces no shortage of challenges. Political divisions, economic uncertainty, and social tensions dominate headlines. Yet America has always been at its best when we remember what unites us rather than what divides us.
A stronger future for our country requires more than policy debates or political victories. It requires a more civil society in which we listen to one another, respect differing viewpoints, and recognize our shared humanity. It requires communities willing to come together around common goals and a collective commitment to ensuring that opportunity is not reserved for some but available to all.
That belief continues to guide our work every day. We envision communities where everyone can experience the joy, satisfaction, and reward that come from achieving economic opportunity and building a better future for themselves and their families. We know that when ALL people are equipped with the tools and support they need to succeed, entire communities prosper.
As we gather with family and friends this Independence Day, let’s celebrate our nation’s achievements as well as our responsibility to one another. Let’s recommit ourselves to building bridges, expanding opportunities, and strengthening the bonds that hold our communities together.
The American Dream remains alive when we work together to ensure that EVERYONE has a fair chance to pursue it.
