National Volunteer Week 2017

We’re wrapping up a week of thanks and acknowledgement to all of our incredible volunteers during National Volunteer week. We have asked our social media followers to share their United Way Volunteering stories for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and we’re happy to announce our winner!

Ken Johnston with LOOP, LLC shares his experience below:

“Our group arrived 15 strong, now nicknamed the “LOOP Troop” at the United Way Distribution Center Warehouse in Hammond. We were there to unload, unpack, sort, box and load donated non-perishable food and household products for distribution to those affected by the August 14th flood.

Several of us were instructed to unpack and sort the donated items and that we may come across some containing a note or letter from the donor. Several boxes into it I was fortunate enough to come across a package containing a letter from two boys with autism.

The letter brought tears to my eyes and touched me in more ways than one could imagine. I then realized what a treasure I had just unpacked. These two boys wanting to help in any way they could by putting together a care package in hopes of putting a smile on the faces of flooded victims. I made a photo with my phone and gave Jamene the letter. I relive the moment over and over and share the letter with everyone I can. Wow!!! What a very rewarding and emotional experience.”

Thanks so much for sharing your story, Ken!

Volunteering can be a rewarding experience beyond the much needed services in the communities where we live and work. Many report a greater sense of purpose and well-being through volunteer projects. Occasionally spending free time helping and working with others helps to combat stress and anxiety, increases self-confidence, and helps you stay physically healthy. As a team building activity in the workplace, volunteerism promotes stronger relationships with colleagues and results in more positive feelings toward an employer when volunteer programs are supported in the workplace.

Thanks to all of our United Way volunteers for helping to make Southeast Louisiana a better place for us all!

Live United!
