NEW ORLEANS — Today, the City of New Orleans encouraged residents to continue to provide donations and volunteer time to assist roughly 10,500 Hurricane Laura evacuees sheltering in New Orleans.
Immediately after Hurricane Laura, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Councilmember Helena Moreno, the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and the Junior League of New Orleans partnered to provide resources to evacuees. Led by the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the New Orleans Health Department, the Hurricane Laura Evacuee Resource Center served an average of 550 evacuees daily for over two weeks at the E. N. Morial Convention Center, with approximately 275 NOLA Ready Corps volunteers contributing over 1800 hours of volunteer time.
Beginning last week, the administration of the Resource Center and donations management were transitioned to the United Way HandsOn Entergy Volunteer Center, a contractor of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. HandsOn continues to solicit donations and recruit volunteers. The City of New Orleans encourages residents to contribute in the following ways:
Volunteer
Sign up for a shift to volunteer with HandsOn at the Hurricane Laura Evacuee Resource Center at the Convention Center. Shifts are available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer roles include:
- Donation intake and sorting
- Tracking inventory
- Managing and stocking donation tables
- Helping greet and assist evacuees coming through the line
Expect to serve over 500 evacuees each day on average. Masks are required and are provided. Sign up to volunteer.

Individuals can drop off donations at the locations listed below, based on each location's parameters. If your business or organization has collected donations, please complete the United Way Hurricane Donation Form. If your local agency or organization is accepting donations from the public, please register here.
Junior League of New Orleans
Where: 4319 Carondelet St.
When: Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
For Whom: Evacuees in New Orleans
Accepting: Diapers, wipes, adult incontinence products, period products
Celebration Church
Where: 1921 Airline Drive, Metairie
When: Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sundays 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
For Whom: Evacuees in New Orleans
Accepting: Hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, diapers, new baby clothes
United Way of Southeast Louisiana
Where: Back parking lot of the United Way building, 2522 Iberville St.
When: Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
For Whom: Residents in Southwest Louisiana
Accepting: Books, cleaning supplies, clothing, electronics, first aid, furniture, hygiene/personal care supplies and kits, infant/toddler items, kitchen supplies, linens, muck & gut supplies, PPE, school/office supplies, tools, and toys
Second Harvest Food Bank
Where: Second Harvest Warehouse, 700 Edwards Ave.
When: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
For Whom: Residents in New Orleans and Southwest Louisiana
Accepting: Non-perishable food items, bottled water, and cleaning supplies
Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing
Where: 955 S. Morrison Blvd. Hammond
When: Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For Whom: Residents in Southwest Louisiana
Accepting: Disaster relief supplies of all kinds, however, no clothes will be accepted
