United Way Announces Public Policy Priorities for 2019 State Legislative Session

United Way of Southeast Louisiana is proud to announce our 2019 State Legislative Agenda, “United for a Safe & Prosperous Community,” which continues our advocacy work to lift up those in poverty and ALICE - individuals who earn above the poverty level but still struggle to make ends meet. 

Our Public Policy team will work to remove barriers and create opportunities for all to prosper by advocating in the following areas. 

UWSELA 2019 State Legislative Agenda


  • Support Early Childhood Education (ECE)

  • Support payment of childcare expenses from campaign funds for candidates running for office


  • Maintain funding of ACA 

  • Support paid family medical leave

  • Support domestic violence protections

Financial Security

  • Support an increase in the minimum wage for constitutional amendment vote of the people for $8.50

  • Support pay equity 

Community Strengthening

  • Increase funding for the Louisiana Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative (LAPRI)

Policy changes are an important piece of the puzzle in our fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community we serve. 2018 saw many wins for the United Way Public Policy team, and we look forward to taking further steps toward more equitable communities during the upcoming legislative session.
