Public Policy Update: May 10, 2016

With 29 days left to go in this legislative session, United Way of Southeast Louisiana had had tremendous success with our United Against Poverty Public Policy Agenda

HB 694 by Rep. Helena Moreno was reported favorably without objection and adopted by the Senate Insurance Committee! HB 694 - Provides relative to required coverage for reconstructive surgeries following mastectomies.
 
Thank you to United Way of Southeast Louisiana’s Public Policy Chairman, Kim Sport; Norma Grace and Dr. Alan Stolier for their testimony; and especially thank you to Rep. Helena Moreno who authored this bill for us. 
 
United Way of Southeast Louisiana and our Women's Leadership Council presented a $25,000 donation to the Louisiana Institute for Children in Families at a Breakfast Briefing with the Foster Care & Adoption Caucus. As part of our 2016 Public Policy Legislative Agenda, United Against Poverty, UWSELA and WLC continues to work in partnership with the LICIF to expand services for teens aging out of foster care and are evaluating national best practices that could possibly increase federal funding to assist with improving outcomes. UWSELA’s Women’s Leadership Council is contributing $25,000 to the LICIF initiative to provide familial, community and state support to these children.
 
SR 107 by Senator Ronnie Johns was adopted.  This Resolution designates the month of May as Foster Care Month.  WHEREAS, every child deserves the safety, love, and well-being of a permanent family and home. 
 
HB 931 by Rep. Malinda White passed favorably today out of the Senate Committee on Judiciary C! This legislation requires completion of intervention programs and to increase sentences for patterns of abuse perpetuated to control victims.
 
There is still work to be done. SB 254 by Sen. J.P. Morrell is scheduled to be heard in the Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations on May 12th at 9:00 a.m.!
